SPEAKERS
John Magee
John Magee has been designing and building landscapes in the Washington DC Metro area and beyond for the past 30 years. After receiving his B.S. degree in Agriculture from the Ohio State University and spending a few years training and showing horses, he settled into the landscaping industry as the General Foreman of Pennsylvania’s highest award-winning landscaping firm.
While in Pennsylvania, he became a volunteer at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary where he met his wife Susana and was introduced to habitat gardening and the use of native plants in the landscape.
He now operates his own award-winning design firm Magee Design in the beautiful countryside of Middleburg, VA where he also enjoys kayaking and taking long walks with his wife and dogs Shaq and Dilly. He created and hosts the award-winning Native Plant Podcast to help inform the public about the benefits of landscaping with native plants. You can learn more about John at his website john-magee.com
Karla Etten
Owner
Karla Etten is the founder of Etten’s Eden, a young but rapidly growing nursery and flower farm located in The Plains, Virginia. Established in 2022 on raw land she purchased and began developing during the early design stages of her family’s future home, Etten’s Eden reflects Karla’s long-standing passion for plants, landscape design, and sustainable growing practices.
Though new to the trade, Karla has made swift and substantial progress: installing a well and irrigation infrastructure, building five high tunnels and a heated greenhouse with an integrated headhouse, and creating a shaded nursery patio with seating for 24+ guests. The space features a koi water feature and a newly installed, large-scale waterfall and koi pond — drawing visitors in and offering a unique setting for plant sales, floral workshops, and community events.
Etten’s Eden emphasizes locally grown, climate-adapted plants, and Karla is steadily expanding her offerings to serve both retail customers and professionals in the landscaping and nursery trade.
